New York–based furniture studio Atelier Viollet has built a reputation for creating heirloom-quality pieces that fuse refined craftsmanship with a modern design language. For principal designer Jean-Paul Viollet, palmwood has long held a special appeal. Originally inspired by the French Art Deco masters, he began working with the material more than 30 years ago.
With Durapalm, Viollet found a partner that could provide the consistency and sustainability he was seeking, without compromising the aesthetic richness he values.
“I’ve always been drawn to the subtle elegance of palmwood,” says Viollet. “Durapalm captures that beauty and brings it into a modern, workable format.”
Durapalm’s palmwood panels have become a go-to material for Atelier Viollet thanks to their durability, rich grain patterns, and ease of fabrication. In his work, Jean-Paul has paired Durapalm with parchment, natural stone veneer, and custom brass hardware to create distinctive designs that feel both timeless and fresh.
Pieces include a sculptural nightstand featuring a floating top and integrated drawers clad in palmwood and parchment; the Eden Desk, which juxtaposes vertically striped palmwood with mosaic stone fronts; and a console table showcasing palmwood’s graphic grain and brass detailing. Each piece is a testament to the material’s versatility and its ability to elevate minimalist forms through texture and contrast.
For Atelier Viollet, sustainability is a key consideration in every design decision. Clients increasingly ask about the origin and environmental impact of materials, and Durapalm helps the studio meet those expectations.
“It’s important to us, and to our clients, to work with vendors who are transparent about where their materials come from,” says Viollet.
In addition to the material’s visual appeal, its renewable sourcing and responsible manufacturing make it a natural fit for the studio’s values.
Atelier Viollet continues to explore new ways to use Durapalm, from furniture to future interior paneling projects. “We would absolutely recommend Durapalm to other designers. Their team understands the material inside and out, and they’re a great resource when it comes to selecting the right product for a specific vision.”
